AUSTIN - The fight over the Cedar Oak Townhomes project in El Paso is “a fight to control tax credits in El Paso, not a good faith complaint” about the Texas Department of Housing and Community Affairs and its decision, Senator Eliot Shapleigh said Thursday in a letter to the TDHCA board.
Shapleigh’s letter was read at the TDHCA board meeting on Thursday after two City Council members spoke against the approval of a low-income housing project. The project is being built by tax credit money allotted to an El Paso builder. Senator Shapleigh’s main concern with the process for approving housing tax credits is that it remain open and allow for input from all interested stakeholders. In order to bring more quality affordable housing projects to El Paso, it is imperative that fair competition is the foundation for determining housing tax credits.
