EL PASO - Starting on Friday, February 18, 2005, the Lower Valley will cease to exist and it will be known and referred to as the Mission Valley.

“This new name is more symbolic of what the area stands for and it pays a tribute to the three historic missions in the area,” said Senator Eliot Shapleigh, who is a member of the Mission Valley Steering Committee.

For years, the Mission Valley Steering Committee has been working to change the area’s name and to improve the quality of life in the neighborhoods and towns of Ysleta, Socorro, San Elizario, Clint, Fabens, Quadrilla and Tornillo.

To announce the name change and what actions have been taken, Senator Eliot Shapleigh, Socorro Mayor Guillermo Gandara and the Mission Valley Steering Committee are having a press conference on Friday, Feb. 18, at 11:30 a.m. The press conference will coincide with the Small Business Administration’s grand opening of the SCORE office in the Socorro, at 860 Rio Vista. SCORE will also have a press conference at the same time at the same site.

One of the first steps in formally becoming the Mission Valley is the committee’s trip to Austin next week. A group of Mission Valley elected officials, business people and constituents is going to Austin for Mission Valley Days in Austin.

The group has also asked the Lower Valley Water Authority to change its name.
