Senate votes on S.B. 8, the latest school finance proposal in the Second Called Special Session
Written by Senator Shapleigh, Press Release

AUSTIN - Today, the Senate debated and voted on S.B. 8, the latest school finance proposal for the Second Called Special Session. Senator Shapleigh voted against the legislation.
"Robin Hood is better than the bill we passed today," Senator Shapleigh stated referring to the current school finance system that was the result of equitable funding challenges from the Edgewood suits.
"S.B. 8 breaks a promise to the over 300,000 Texas teachers and education professionals for a real pay raise, does lasting harm to basic concepts of equity and permits private corporations to take over public schools," Senator Shapleigh continued.
In explaining the additional funding provided to schools through the bill, Senator Shapleigh explained, "After they pay for all the mandates in the bill, urban districts actually lose money. If we truly value education, then we need to fund it."
