AUSTIN — Gov. Rick Perry on Monday ordered Texas flags at state buildings lowered to half-staff Thursday and Friday in memory of former state Sen. Frank Madla, D-San Antonio.

Madla, 69, died last week in a fire at his home on the Southwest Side. His mother-in-law, Mary Cruz, 81, and 5-year-old granddaughter, Aleena Jimenez, also died from injuries suffered in the fire.

A rosary and funeral Mass for Madla is scheduled to start at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church at 13715 Riggs Road in Helotes.

Burial will be at 1 p.m. Friday in the State Cemetery in Austin at 909 Navasota St.

In a statement issued by the White House on Monday, President Bush expressed his sympathies to the Madla family.

"Frank never hesitated to reach across party lines to do what was best for his fellow Texans, and I was proud to work with him when I was governor. Texas has lost a fine man," Bush said.

The president said he and first lady Laura Bush were praying for a "full and speedy recovery" for Madla's wife, Helen, who was injured in the fire.

Perry called Madla a "dear friend and a dedicated public servant." He encouraged cities, counties and businesses to also fly their flags at half-staff.
