On the Senator's Desk:
As the holiday season winds down, community and policy activities are picking up again. Senator Shapleigh has been spending his days meeting with community groups and constituents. Additionally, the Senator is looking ahead to upcoming events in our community. Next week, the Governor's Tax Commission will be holding a hearing in El Paso. On Wednesday, January 11th at the City Council Chambers, the Texas Tax Reform Commission will hear from El Pasoans about reworking Texas' taxation system.
Those who visited:
With the filing deadline past and the campaigning season upon us, folks from across Texas are contacting Senator Shapleigh to talk about their visions. Scott Chase of Dallas is running for Dallas County Commissioners Court on the platform that he will make budget and tax decisions that reflect the moral and ethical choices that must be made to improve the lives of all residents of Dallas County.
Upcoming events:
Next week, Senator Shapleigh is co-hosting the ASARCO Bi-national Legislative Conference. Along with Senator Jeffrey Jones of Mexico, we will convene a half-day conference on ASARCO issues on January 12, 2006 from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Ex-Aduana (former Customs House) building in downtown Ciudad Juarez.
The goals of the conference are to outline the facts surrounding ASARCO's operations and permits, and the regional impact that ASARCO has made.
