Red River Army Depot is Texarkana's number one employer and home to the region's best jobs. So when BRAC Commissioners visited the region, thousands lined the streets wearing yellow to show support for the installation. In fact, both Texas and Arkansas officials are working steadfastly to persuade the Commission to spare the regional installations from closure. A recent steak dinner raised $30,000, and the Texarkana Chamber of Commerce hopes to raise $350,000 to save the local depot. A union representing Red River workers is selling "It ain't over yet!" caps and T-shirts in yellow — the same color used in BRAC 1995. Arkansas lawmakers have announced "they would pursue all possible options to reverse BRAC's recommendations."

Fort Hood Can Expect Additional Changes
On June 22nd, an announcement by Army Secretary Francis Harvey that the 4th Infantry Division will return not to Fort Hood, but instead to Fort Carson, Colo. after its next deployment to Iraq instigated immediate concern in Killeen. The announcement comes after a decade of solid growth around the post as communities built new schools and expanded infrastructure to accommodate the seemingly growing role Fort Hood played in the Pentagon’s plans for a more mobile, more high-tech fighting force. Despite the loss of the 4th Infantry, some leaders feel that the change will actually be better for Central Texas in the long run as the Army continues to shift other brigades and divisions to Fort Hood.
