Summit on stimulus

The El Paso area has been allocated more than $500 million for various government projects through the $787 billion federal economic stimulus bill approved by the U.S. Congress this year, U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, told more than 250 business people who attended the Stimulus Act Summit held by the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Minority Business Development Agency.

EL PASO -- The El Paso area has been allocated more than $500 million for various government projects through the $787 billion federal economic stimulus bill approved by the U.S. Congress this year, U.S. Rep. Silvestre Reyes, D-El Paso, told more than 250 business people who attended the Stimulus Act Summit held by the El Paso Hispanic Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Minority Business Development Agency.

Neill said the county has identified $159 million worth of projects that may be eligible for stimulus money. They include solar and other energy-efficiency projects, and a project to deliver Internet service to outlying areas of the county, she said. Berdell Collins, a business development specialist for the Texas Department of Transportation in Austin, said the state department has received about $4 billion from the stimulus bill for highway projects statewide. Albert Garza, director of the U.S. General Services Administration's small business utilization office in Fort Worth, said the list of federal projects being paid for by the stimulus bill is growing daily.
