EL PASO - The April winner of Senator Eliot Shapleigh’s "Adelante Con Ganas" award, which is given to “an ordinary person who is doing extraordinary deeds,” is the Cesar Chavez Monument Committee, which on Thursday dedicated a 9-foot statute of the man who organized farm workers.

The award is being given to the committee, which was co-chaired by Chilo Madrid, because it worked for four years and raised $100,000 to pay tribute to the farm worker with a monument at the Cesar Chavez Academy, 7814 Alameda Avenue. More than 500 people attended the dedication ceremony on Thursday, March 31.

“The work this committee did was extraordinary,” Shapleigh said. “They proved ‘que si se puede’ hacer anything you want to with hard work and perseverance. ”

The Con Ganas award is awarded the first week of each month by Senator Shapleigh. Nominations are solicited throughout the month and must be for “ordinary people who are doing extraordinary deeds.”
