Valley Interfaith Rallies Against House Bill 2

Guevara wants to know why Valley students will get less funding than those in Highland Park or Kenedy County.

Valley Interfaith leaders will rally Monday morning at Sacred Heart Church in Mercedes in opposition to House Bill 2; the major education and school finance legislation. Danny King, superintendent of Hidalgo ISD and president of the South Texas Association of Schools, and other school leaders are expected to attend.

"House Bill 2 is Robin Hood in reverse. It takes from the poor and gives to the rich. Our children deserve"; said Rosalie Tristan, a Valley Interfaith leader from Our Lady of Guadalupe Church in Raymondville.

In a press release, Valley Interfaith highlights how property rich school districts such as Highland Park ISD and Kenedy County Wide ISD do so much better under HB 2 than property poor school districts in the Valley.

"We are asking our state officials to tell us why do our children from the Valley deserve so much less than the children in Highland Park and Kenedy County?" said Father Alfonso Guevara, pastor of St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in McAllen. Guevara said Valley Interfaith would be pitching that question to Republican leaders in Austin on Tuesday.
