EL PASO – On Friday, July 13 at 1:30 p.m., Senator Shapleigh will honor Mary Legorreta with the Adelante Con Ganas Award at her home in El Paso. Every month Senator Shapleigh awards one or more persons who have made an extraordinary commitment to service, family and community. This month he honors Mary Legorreta for her courage helping to pass a new state law imposing harsher penalties for owners whose dogs attack and cause serious injury.
Mary, a 61-year-old retired El Paso teacher who was severely injured two years ago when two pit bulls in Central El Paso mauled her, traveled to Austin during the 80th Texas Legislature to advocate for the bill. This week, she traveled to Austin again, this time for a ceremonial signing of the bill with Governor Rick Perry. Mary's work is an example of the extraordinary achievements one El Pasoan can make in our community.
The award ceremony will be held at Mary's home on 3026 Polk Avenue. The media and public are invited to attend.
