Framing Downtown Revitalization: working together for the next generation

All of us want Downtown Revitalization.

The issue should be framed around the life of a Southside resident born today. How will her life be better tomorrow for what we do today? Where will she work? Where will he play? Where will families live and how will they prosper?

The Southside needs to change -- especially in the area of affordable housing. The current process is flawed because a few in the private sector made a plan that is now effectively a public sector plan. We in El Paso must roll up our sleeves, come to the table together, and engage in a process that can significantly make better the lives of those for whom we all care.

Since portions of the plan may require state legislation, Senator Shapleigh has committed his office to serving as a forum for debate and dialogue with respect to any Downtown Plan. El Paso is served best when leaders join together in a civil, honest, and respectful dialogue so that we as a community can state clearly our concerns and move forward with a process and plan that is framed around what is best for all the Southside and all El Paso.

Whatever happens to the center of our great city will affect affordable housing in those neighborhoods nearby. This moment in history may be the best opportunity for the Southside to secure affordable housing, workforce funding, and significant investment in cultural restoration that we all want.

"As one who has dedicated time and resources to preserving the unique and dramatic history of the Mexican Revolution in the Southside, I personally want to guarantee preservation of those historical treasures that exist in our midst," said Senator Shapleigh.
