On the Senator's Desk: On Monday, November 28th, Senator Shapleigh honored a local "hero" with the Adelante Con Ganas Award. Every month Senator Shapleigh awards one or more persons who have made an extraordinary commitment to service, family and community. For November, he honored General James P. Maloney for his extraordinary commitment to El Paso's military community. General Maloney has for many years been a strong advocate for Fort Bliss, helping it grow into one of the premiere Army installations in the nation and the world.
Another exciting event this week was the groundbreaking for the second building for El Paso's own 4 year medical school. Senator Shapleigh secured the funding for construction of this building in 2003, and is continuing to work with state and local leaders to obtain the funding to establish a full faculty for the school.
Those who visited: On Tuesday, Senator Shapleigh met with Dr. Zenaido Camacho, the newly appointed Associate Dean of Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center El Paso School of Medicine, and Dr. Jose Manuel de la Rosa, Regional Dean. Dr. Camacho will be responsible for the day to day internal operations of the school, allowing Dr. de la Rosa to focus on more external demands in the community. The three leaders discussed the progression of the school's growth.
Upcoming events: On Saturday, December 3rd, at noon, a March for Justice will be held to bring attention to the over 400 murders of young women in Juarez. The marchers will gather at Armijo Park at noon and march to the El Paso del Norte Bridge. Come and help express outrage over the murders and the injustice created by the negligence in investigating them.
