EL PASO - The November winner of Senator Eliot Shapleigh’s "Adelante Con Ganas" award, which is given to “an ordinary person who is doing extraordinary deeds,” is a Fort Bliss soldier who spends much of his spare time volunteering with youth.
Shapleigh said the award was given to Spc. Michael Perry because he provides his services to the Fort Bliss youth center and at Logan Heights. Perry was selected from a list of nominees.
As part of his involvement with youth activities, Perry helps with the football and cheerleading programs, as well as the Haunted House at Fort Bliss. Perry is also involved in the El Paso Hands for Food program, which is an organization that assembles to feed the hungry during Thanksgiving.
As the recipient, Spc. Michael Perry received a bust of President John F. Kennedy commemorating the award, a gift certificate to Jaxon’s and a "Con Ganas" coffee mug. The Con Ganas award is awarded the first Thursday of each month by Senator Shapleigh. Nominations are solicited throughout the month and must be for “ordinary people who are doing extraordinary deeds.”
