We applaud the Environmental Protection Agency's decision to appoint Dr. Alfredo "Al" Armendariz as the new administrator for Region VI, which covers operations in Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, New Mexico and Oklahoma.

Dr. Armendariz, an El Paso native, is currently a professor in the School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University in Dallas.  He graduated from Coronado High School, he is an MIT-trained chemical engineer with M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in environmental engineering.  In addition to his teaching and research duties at SMU, which have focused on air pollution control, climate change, and industrial hygiene, Dr. Armendariz has worked as a technical advisor to environmental groups in Texas and other states.  These groups have been the last line of defense for the environment during an era of weak federal and state protections, and Dr. Armendariz has been as steady ally on the side of public health.

With his technical background and years of industrial experience, Dr. Armendariz understands the need for a growing, vibrant, and globally competitive manufacturing sector.  But he also recognizes that industrial production must take place within the context of robust and careful environmental protection, and that these two goals can be achieved simultaneously.

"Al Armendariz is a polished professional. He knows environmental issues well. He is also committed to upholding federal law. Every Texan can look forward to his great work at EPA." said Senator Shapleigh.
