AUSTIN, Texas -- State Sen. Eliot Shapleigh and state Rep. Marisa Marquez honored Maria Ruiz with special resolutions Monday on the floors of the Texas Senate and House.

"Maria Ruiz's story is an amazing lesson of service, sacrifice and dedication to others. She has inspired many people," Shapleigh said.

Marquez called Maria and her husband Jesus Ruiz's compassion "both rare and remarkable."

The Ruiz family works to provide food, clothing and toys for poor needy families in Juarez. Maria Ruiz was a finalist for CNN's Hero of the Year award in 2008, and the Ruiz family received a brand new home from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" in January.
