SENATOR SHAPLEIGH TO AWARD PAULA POWELL WITH "ADELANTE CON GANAS"

On Monday, June 30 at 1:00 p.m., Senator Shapleigh will honor Paula Powell with the "Adelante Con Ganas Award." Every month Senator Shapleigh awards one or more persons who have made an extraordinary commitment to service, family and community.

On Monday, June 30 at 1:00 p.m., Senator Shapleigh will honor Paula Powell with the "Adelante Con Ganas Award."  Every month Senator Shapleigh awards one or more persons who have made an extraordinary commitment to service, family and community. 

This month's honoree, Paula Powell, is the Interim Sports Manager of the El Paso Parks and Recreations Department at the City of El Paso.  Paula has made extensive contributions to the public recreation of El Paso's youth; especially in her expansion of soccer in El Paso summer sports programs.  Paula played a vital role in the establishment of a thirteen-field Westside Soccer Complex.

 In addition, Paula provides support for a variety of popular youth sports in El Paso, from softball to football.  In 2005, Paula worked with the community to earn El Paso the Sports Illustrated Good Community Award; and in 2002, Paula represented El Paso at the Josephson Institute's "Pursuing Victory With Honor—A Summit on Youth Sports."  Paula also works on the Little Cesar's Sun Bowl International Soccer Tournament, an event that has become one of the largest youth soccer programs in the region.  This last year, the soccer tournament attracted 170 teams. 

Currently, Paula is continuing her education at the University of Texas at El Paso, pursuing a master's degree in Sports Management.  The award ceremony will be held at Sun Bowl Association, 4150 Pinnacle, Suite 100.
