SENATOR SHAPLEIGH HONORED FOR HIS PIONEERING WORK IN USING TECHNOLOGY FOR TEXANS

AUSTIN –  Last Friday, Jan. 10, Senator Eliot Shapleigh (D-El Paso) was honored in Austin for his commitment to the advancement of technology in Texas.

"With state-of-the-art technology, government can provide better, faster services at lower cost," said Senator Shapleigh.  "That's exactly what taxpayers expect."

The American Electronics Association (AeA) Texas Council selected Senator Shapleigh as a 2007 Texas Technology Champion. Along with Governor Rick Perry and other technology leaders in the state, he was honored at a legislative awards dinner at Austin's Hilton Hotel.

Senator Shapleigh was honored for his pioneer work in:

    * Developing "Texas Online," one of the top state government websites in the United States;
 
    * Launching the "Texas Technology Immersion Program," a program designed to provide laptops for every Texas public school student; and 

    *  Creating E-Vets, an innovative one-stop shop for Texas veterans to locate key federal, state and local veteran-related programs.

AeA is a nationwide non-profit trade association that represents all segments of the technology industry.
