SENATOR SHAPLEIGH TO HOST PRESS CONFERENCE ON TCEQ: CAPTURED AND CORRUPTED TOMORROW

On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 10 a.m., Senator Eliot Shapleigh (D-El Paso) will host a press conference in the Senate Press Room (2E.9) to connect the dots on how industry influence controls outcomes of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). In particular, Senator Shapleigh will focus on El Paso's ASARCO air permit and his battle with TCEQ over open records associated with that permit.

AUSTIN - On Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 10 a.m., Senator Eliot Shapleigh (D-El Paso) will host a press conference in the Senate Press Room (2E.9) to connect the dots on how industry influence controls outcomes of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ). In particular, Senator Shapleigh will focus on El Paso's ASARCO air permit and his battle with TCEQ over open records associated with that permit.
After the press conference, at 1:30 p.m., the 3rd Court of Appeals will hear oral arguments regarding TCEQ's continued attempts to prevent Senator Shapleigh's access to documents he requested in February 2008. During Wednesday's press conference Senator Shapleigh will:
- detail the commission's "revolving door" with polluting industries;
- discuss incidents of ex parte communications between TCEQ officials and the businesses they are charged with regulating; and
- what TCEQ's alliance with ASARCO has cost U.S., Texas and El Paso taxpayers.
