SENATOR SHAPLEIGH TO AWARD RHASEAN STEPHENS WITH "ADELANTE CON GANAS"

EL PASO – On Tuesday, February 26, 2008 at 1:00 p.m., Senator Shapleigh will honor Rhasean Stephens with the "Adelante Con Ganas Award."  Every month Senator Shapleigh awards one or more persons who have made an extraordinary commitment to service, family and community.  This month's honoree, Rhasean Stephens, is a senior at Jefferson High School and the winner of the Martin Luther King, Jr. committee essay competition. He recited the speech, entitled "Still, I Have a Dream," during opening ceremonies for Black History Month at the University of Texas at El Paso.

Rhasean Stephens presented before the 25th annual Political Awareness/Awards Banquet of the Black El Paso Democrats on February 9, 2008 and was honored as their first Youth of the Month. He participates in Jefferson High School's track and football, speech and debate, and DECA programs. As DECA treasurer for Jefferson, Stephens became a state qualifier for this academic year.

The award ceremony will be held at the Jefferson High School Auditorium, 4700 Alameda
